Teaches argument, interpersonal communication, rhetoric and public policy, and public speaking.

COMMRC 0520 Public Speaking emphasizes theory-guided performance.  Students will research, organize, and deliver formal speeches that are critiqued and evaluated by the instructor and class members.  Theories of communication, persuasion and rhetoric, speech anxiety, audience analysis, and speaker competence will be utilized to enhance students’ speech performance.

Taught broadcasting, journalism, and communication courses: news writing and reporting, writing for radio and television (screen writing), broadcast performance, oral communication, media sales, special topics: instructional technology from 2018-2022. Created asynchronous remote modules on Sakai for COM 231, COM 232, and COM 312.

COM 101: ORAL COMMUNICATION

A practical course in interpersonal communication including elementary phases of oral language training, short speeches, articulation, and pronunciation.  Emphasis is on effective communication.

COM 231: NEWS WRITING & REPORTING

This course is an introduction to the skills necessary for success in the world of journalism; this class examines writing and editing stories in a variety of styles, information gathering and research methods, interviewing skills, writing leads, avoiding libel, and developing adept and responsible digital practices.

COM 232: BROADCAST NEWS WRITING

An introduction to the principles of broadcast news writing, this course offers hands-on instruction through the use of modern technology and information gathering, organization and writing for broadcast and online media.

COM 322: WRITING FOR RADIO, TV, AND NEW MEDIA

Theory and practical writing experience for the various forms of radio and television including news, sports, commercials, documentary, and educational programming.

COM 312: MEDIA SALES

The study of media sales methods. Emphasis will be placed on the various types of media campaigns and the selling process.

COM : 339 ON-CAMPUS INTERNSHIP

Students in COM 339 will gain real world experience in the various duties and practical responsibilities which lead to the timely and accurate production of news products, both print and online, as well as responsible utilization of social media platforms.

Basic functions of on-air announcing for television and radio. Emphasis on oral interpretation, teleprompter delivery, news and sports reads and off-script reads.
